Malteser International provides 50,000 Euros for the victims of the severe floodings in Bihar/India

After the breaking of a dam along the Kosi River in Nepal, heavily populated areas in Nepal and Bihar State in India have been flooded endangering thousands of people. „Whole villages have been flooded and people had to climb on trees and buildings to save their lives”, Florian Seeger, Malteser International Coordinator, reports from the disaster region. “297,958 houses have been damaged and a recent report confirms that 75 people lost their lives so far. This figure is expected to climb as the population has been surprised by the flooding and large parts of the people were unable to evacuate themselves”, Seeger says.

The Malteser Coordinator will assess the situation jointly with delegates from an experienced Indian partner organisation. The team will travel from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh to Putna, the state capital of Bihar and further on to the flooded areas. There, the team will join forces with local NGOs to access needs and decide about best means to help. Relief supplies will be bought in the area and be directly distributed to affected communities that have not been reached yet.
